Concert and torchlight procession in memory of the fallen in 1944

Every year on June 29 in San Pancrazio is organized a torchlight procession with musical moments and readings in memory of the 1944 massacre.

This year the Laboratorio Corale Careggi from Florence, in collaboration with D.I.M.A., offers a concert that will take place in the evening of June 29 in the square (in case of bad weather in the village church).

Laboratorio Corale Careggi di Firenze

Fiorella Buono, choir - Gregorio Del Vecchio and Matilde Michielin, clarinets - Marcello Nesi and Luciano Fiorello, trumpets - Marco Bartolomei, trombone - Giovanni Del Vecchio, pianist and conductor

The concert is dedicated to the memory of those who died in the struggle for the liberation of Italy from Nazi fascism. It is a celebration of the sacrifices made by so many, often very young partisans in full consciousness. Popular music, but not only, with popular songs and a composition written ad hoc in 2013 by Giovanni Del Vecchio, who has directed the Laboratorio Corale Careggi since 2011. It is a rhapsody of about half an hour for choir and wind instruments. It consists of the dramatic juxtaposition (and overlapping) of more or less extended fragments of partisan melodies and excerpts from letters of convicts about to be shot, read by the choristers themselves. The dramatic contrast between the often - but not only - tragic tones of the texts and the boldness of the songs underscores the heroism of these many young men and women.

First meeting of German and Italian students at San Pancrazio

From March 17 to 22, students from the Conservatory Saar, the Conservatory Cherubini Florence and the D.I.M.A. met for the first time at the residence of San Pancrazio to get to know each other, rehearse and perform concerts together. The "German" students came from Germany, Turkey, Ukraine, Taiwan and Spain. Musical moments took place in the painting gallery in Civitella in Val di Chiana, in the RSA in Bucine and in the evenings in San Pancrazio. We dedicated a whole morning to Civitella, with a guided tour by Prof. Dino Tiezzi, founder of the incredible Picture Gallery, founded in the 1970s to bring beauty back to this place that had not yet recovered since 1944 and only slowly began to come to terms with what it had experienced. Dino is also the last survivor of the massacre and still cries when he tells about it. Terzilio Bozzi, the vice-president of the Civitella Ricorda Association, makes sure that the memory remains. The Ukrainian students reminded us that similar massacres happen every day, even today. They are not yet a memory...

This beautiful first international meeting full of intense moments ended with a concert at the D.I.M.A. headquarters at Casa Petrarca in Arezzo. Everyone will meet again in October in San Pancrazio to continue preparing the anniversary of the massacres in June 2024.
